Few weeks ago, there was a report of iROKOtv shutting down its desktop site and going mobile-only. The streaming service will have to brace up as Afrostream, a new startup intends to give it a run for its money.
Afrostream will provide only African and non America movies. It’s going to be the Netflix of Africa, although, it’s not going to be limited to Africa.
According to TechCruch, the startup will launch in September with a subscription fee of £7 per month. At launch, it would be available only in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Senegal and Ivory Coast. It is expected that Nigeria and some select Africa countries will follow afterwards.
Afrostream has already entered into agreement with major studios, independent American, African and British distributors.
We want to entertain people and make a feel-good platform. A movie can elevate or inspire someone, and that's why there's so much excitement around us, said Tonjé Bakang, CEO and founder of Afrostream.
The startup has already rised over $100,000 prior to launch. Afrostream will continue to seek for streaming rights as it expands in future. It’s not clear when this will happen in Nigeria’s Nollywood, but one thing is sure, Afrostream will strive to succeed where iROKOtv has succeeded; Africa’s biggest economy.
